Ukraine's loss of right to host EuroBasket 2015 out of question – Lubkivsky

Director of EuroBasket 2015 tournament Markiyan Lubkivsky has said Ukraine is preparing for the tournament according to plan, following the plans drawn up.

"FIBA Europe, National Basketball Federation and local organizing committee of EuroBasket 2015 plan and hold all events envisaged by the preparatory stage of the tournament. One of them was the draw for the second qualification round of the EuroBasket 2015, which took place in Barcelona on February 3. Besides in Barcelona they discussed and approved the concept of the final draw, which is to be held in late 2014 and bring together all basketball elite of Europe," the committee's press service quotes him as saying.

Lubkivsky said that in several weeks a program "Friends of Basketball 2015" will be launched.

"Lots of European and world basketball legends will come. In spring the mascot of the championship will be put on display – we're finishing the acceptance of the bids," he added.

According to Lubkivsky, almost 50 operational concepts and programs, among which are concepts for organizing matches, security, transport, programs for the attraction of the volunteers, sales of tickets, and cooperation with the host cities, have already been prepared.

"Agreements to hold the tournaments have already been signed with Lviv and Dnipropetrovsk, and next are Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa and Kyiv. An agreement with the investor in one of two Kyiv arenas - Devision Entertainment Ltd. –has been signed, and agreements with the Kharkiv and Donetsk arenas have almost been completed," he stressed.

The EuroBasket 2015 director confirmed that FIBA-Europe, jointly with the local organizing committee, is thoroughly monitoring the construction of the sports arenas in all six cities.

"It's evident that FIBA-Europe is also keeping an eye on the political situation in Ukraine. It's clear that colleagues in FIBA-Europe can't but wish for the rapid stabilization of the situation in our country," he said.

"So, the top item on today's agenda is the acceleration of the tempo of building arenas, but not the depriving of Ukraine of the right to hold EuroBasket 2015. At the same time I want to remind you of the rumors that were spread around Euro 2012 in Ukraine - that Ukraine wouldn't be able to cope. These [rumors] were shown to be false, and the championship we held was the best in the whole history of UEFA," Lubkivsky said.

As media reported on Wednesday, during the meeting, President of Basketball Federation of Ukraine Oleksandr Volkov and leadership of FIBA-Europe in Barcelona said that Ukraine could possibly be deprived of the right to host EuroBasket 2015 because of the slow construction of arenas and the political unrest in the country.
