FIBA Europe: U16 EuroBasket 2013 in Kyiv to be an important test of preparations for EuroBasket 2015

Head of the FIBA Europe Competitions and Referees Department Richard Stokes has said that the U16 European Basketball Championship 2013 in Kyiv will be an important test in the context of Ukraine's preparations for EuroBasket 2015.

"We oblige all national federations to hold youth championships ahead of EuroBasket. Last year we held the U20 championship in Ljubljana [Slovenia will host EuroBasket 2013], and there was a similar situation in Lithuania [in 2009]. This is a kind of test before holding EuroBasket," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine in Vannes (France), which is currently hosting EuroBasket Women 2013.

Stokes said that such competitions help test the work of new arenas.

"In Kyiv, despite the fact that the arena [Sports Palace] is almost ready and is not new, this event is important for improving the coordination of the personnel's work. Accordingly, at new arenas it will also be necessary to hold test events to check their operational readiness," he said.

The FIBA Europe representative did not rule out that in 2014, Ukraine could also host another European basketball championship in a youth age group.

The U16 European Basketball Championship will be held in Kyiv's Sports Palace from August 8 to August 18, 2013.
