MP Poroshenko sure of opposition's ability to nominate single candidate for Kyiv mayor
Independent Ukrainian MP Petro Poroshenko has said that the government "will not live to see the split in the opposition," which is sure to nominate a single candidate for the mayor of Kyiv.
"There will definitely be a single candidate. If it is Poroshenko, then I will go to the polls to win," the lawmaker said on a political show on the ICTV Channel on Monday night.
"If another candidate is nominated, I will support him so that a pro-government candidate should not win in the capital," Poroshenko said.
The Ukrainian opposition is pressing for holding the election of the capital city mayor this year, but cannot get this decision through parliament due to the lack of support of the majority faction. The Regions Party declares its readiness to vote for a relevant decision only after the Constitutional Court passes its ruling concerning the date of the elections of the mayor of Kyiv and the city council.
