Under fulfillment of sowing plan for winter crops for 2014 harvest in Ukraine will reach 400,000 ha, says ministry

The Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine predicts that the under fulfillment of the sowing plan for winter crops for the 2014 harvest will be 400,000 hectares.

"Today we won't manage to sow on 400,000 hectares according to forecasts, including 350,000 hectares with winter crops," Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk told reporters on Friday, November 8.

He said that sowing of winter crops is almost finished and would last for several more days in southern regions.

He said that the said fields would be sowed in spring mainly with corn and barley.

He said that the fields with corn would expand by 500,000 hectares, to 5.5 million hectares in 2014.

The minister said that in 2014 fields with sunflower would be slightly reduced.

"Thanks to the expansion of the use of a high-quality seed technology and technical refitting, we'll increase the sunflower harvest, but the growing area will be reduced," the minister said.
