Sum of contracts with Altcom to build airport and two bridges in Turkmenistan to reach $1 b

The total value of contracts for the construction of an international airport in Turkmenistan and a railway and car bridges across the Amu Darya River between the cities of Turkmenabat and Farap, will amount to nearly $1 billion, according to Mykhailo Kovalev, the deputy director of the Altcom financial and industrial group (both based in Donetsk), which won a tender to carry out the said work.

"We won the tender. We've not yet signed the final agreement. The approximate value of the three contracts is around $1 billion," he said.

"Today we’ve made a new road bridge across the Amu Darya River. Today the presidents [Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych and Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov] will lay the first stone in the construction of three new projects – the airport and railway and road bridges," he said.

As reported, Altcom Road Construction (Donetsk), part of the Altcom financial and industrial group, will design and build an international airport in Turkmenabat and build a railway and car bridges across the Amu Darya River between the cities of Turkmenabat and Farap.

The airport will service 500 passengers per hour. A contract to build the new international airport was signed by Altcom with state national service Turkmenhowayollary (Turkmen Airlines).

The decision to build the airport was made intending to develop the air transportation sector under the program of the Turkmenistan's president on the social and economic development of the country for 2012-2016 and improve the culture of passenger servicing, increase the number of international flights and ensure the safety of flights.

A contract for the designing and building of the Turkmenabat-Farap railway bridge, which will stretch 1,750 meters across the Amu Darya River, will be signed by the Ministry of Railway transport of Turkmenistan. The project will promote an increase in the volumes of cargo and passenger transportation and the improvement of their quality.

A contract to build a car bridge of 1,600 meters long and 21 meters wide is being signed with the State Concern Turkmenavtoyollary (Turkmen roads). It foresees riverbank protection work, and the construction of approach roads and external power lines.

The construction of the three projects will start in February 2013. Under the contracts, the first two projects – the airport and the railway bridge – will be commissioned in February 2016, and the road bridge's construction will finish in August 2016.
