Ukraine's Melnychenko becomes world heptathlon champion
Ukraine's Hanna Melnychenko has won the heptathlon gold medal at the world championships in Moscow.
Melnychenko finished just behind Brianne Theisen Eaton of Canada in the final 800-meter race on Tuesday, but it was enough to protect her lead.
The Ukrainian heptathlete totaled 6,586 points beating Theisen Eaton (6,530) and Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands (6,477).
This is the first medal for Ukraine at the World Championships in Athletics in Moscow.
A heptathlon is a track and field combined events contest made up of seven events.
Women's heptathlon consists of the following events, with the first four contested on the first day, and the remaining three on day two: 100 m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 m, long jump, javelin throw, 800 m.
