Pompeo reassures Lukashenko of absent NATO threat – media
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said in a telephone conversation with the United States' State Secretary Mike Pompeo that as members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Minsk and Moscow are obliged to respond to foreign aggression; Pompeo said there was no such threat from NATO countries.
According to the presidential press pool's Telegram-channel, Lukashenko said that Russia was Belarus' main ally, "especially noting the support being provided in the current period."
"Russia does not interfere in the internal affairs of Belarus yet the countries are prepared to respond to rising foreign threats," Lukashenko said.
"In particular under the CSTO treaty, to protect the common space in the event of outside aggression on the part of Poland, Lithuania or other countries, Belarus and Russia will be compelled to react," Lukashenko was quoted by the Telegram-channel as saying.
Pompeo replied that there was no need to fear such a threat from NATO, Poland or Lithuania, because there is no such threat, the channel said.
