Poland extradites former Ukrspyrt chief accountant Bezrodny to Ukraine

Polish prosecutors have extradited to Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) ex-chief accountant of the state-owned Ukrspyrt enterprise Serhiy Bezrodny, who is now under arrest, PGO spokeswoman Larysa Sarhan has said.

"Polish prosecutors granted the PGO's petition for the extradition of Bezrodny, ex-chief accountant of the state enterprise Ukrspyrt to Ukraine for criminal prosecution. The pretrial investigation found that Bezrodny, in preliminary conspiracy with other officials, squandered the funds of the state enterprise for a total of UAH 260,808,631 and, in a conspiracy with a group of people, evaded taxes in the amount of UAH 49,859,541," Sarhan said, adding that Bezrodny was turned over at the Dorohusk-Yahodyn border checkpoint on July 16, 2018.

Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky district court on July 17, 2018, ruled to arrest Bezrodny with bail set at UAH 27,615,000.

Sarhan said the pretrial investigation continues. Bezrodny is suspected of violating Part 5 of Article 191, Part 3 of Article 212, Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 2 of Article.366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Bezrodny had been on the international wanted list. Interpol in Ukraine said he was detained in Poland on July 25, 2016.

On August 1, 2016, Ukraine's PGO sent an extradition request. Ukraine's PGO is seeking the extradition of former Ukrspyrt director Mykhailo Labutin, reportedly detained in Romania on January 25, 2018. He is suspected of various serious crimes, including planning the assassination of Ukraine's Interior Minister.
