Ukrainian Sentsov, who went on hunger strike, transferred to 1-man cell - lawyer

Ukrainian citizen Oleh Sentsov, who went on a hunger strike in a penal colony, has been transferred to "a safe place," a one-man cell, his lawyer Dmitry Dinze said.

"According to regulations, such a prisoner, who has gone on a hunger strike, is to be isolated. He was placed in a separate cell in a separate 'safe place,' where the convict is being held alone without any outside contacts," the lawyer said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

An average period during which a person can continue a hunger strike is two months and may be adjusted depending on, for instance, chronic illnesses, Dinze said.

"He will continue his hunger strike through and through. [...] He won't make any concessions," the lawyer said.

The Northern Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Sentsov, who was detained in Crimea in 2014, to 20 years in a high-security penal colony in August 2015 for an attempt to create a so-called terrorist group in Crimea.

He is serving his sentence in a high-security correctional facility known as Bely Medved (White Bear).
