Venice Commission not supporting Hungary in flap over Ukraine's education law
The European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) has not supported Hungary's accusation of narrowing the rights of national minorities in the article on the language of instruction in the Law of Ukraine "On Education," the Ministry of Education and Science said with reference to the conclusions of the Venice Commission dated December 8.
"We are also grateful that the Commission accepted the argument of the Ukrainian side regarding reproaches that the language article of the law "On Education" narrows the rights of representatives of national minorities," the press service of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine said on Friday.
It is noted in the information that the Venice Commission stated that the issues of the content and scope of rights are exclusively within the competence of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, and a number of questions concerning the use of languages should be resolved by special laws.
"Therefore, Hungary's accusations are not supported," the ministry said in a statement.
