Tymoshenko calls for extension of moratorium on land sale by at least 5-10 years
Leader of the Batkivschyna party Yulia Tymoshenko has supported the extension of the moratorium on farmland sales for another 5-10 years.
"We need to immediately decide what we'll do with the agrarian complex. This is the main strategy of the country because we are mostly an agricultural country. Therefore [we need to] immediately extend [the moratorium] and clearly state this. We need to prolong it not for a year but for at least five, seven, ten years - as long as we build farming for it to provide the main income of the country," Tymoshenko said at a meeting of the conciliatory council of the heads of parliamentary factions, committees and groups.
The moratorium on the sale or alienation of agricultural land in Ukraine in December 2015 was extended until January 1, 2017.
The document stipulates that the purchase and sale of agricultural land of state and municipal ownership is prohibited until the law on farmland turnover enters into force but not earlier than January 1, 2017.
