Rada establishes criminal liability for certain military crimes during special period

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has made amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine regarding liability for certain military crimes.

A total of 245 MPs voted for the bill at second reading on Thursday.

According to the law, committing certain military crimes under special period leads conditions will result in a harsher criminal penalty.

The amendments have been made to a number of articles of the Criminal Code that establish harsh criminal liability for certain military crimes, if they are committed either under martial law or during the special period. This period includes mobilization, war time, and the period of partial restoration when the war is over.

Disobedience during the special period, excluding the time of martial law, will lead to five-seven years in prison. Failure to obey a commander's orders under the conditions of the special period will lead to two-five years in prison.

Opposing a superior or being made by a superior to violate official duties during the special period leads to three-ten years in prison, going absent without leave during the special period leads to three-seven years in prison, and the abandonment of one’s post is punishable by five-ten years in prison.
