NATO military want to restore contact with Russian colleagues
NATO military have discussed a possibility of resuming contact with Russian colleagues after it was disrupted over the crisis in Ukraine, says U.S. Gen. Philip Breedlove, the chief commander of NATO forces in Europe.
Speaking at a press conference after a two-day meeting of the NATO Military Committee he confirmed that NATO chiefs of staff were discussing the importance of resuming contacts with high-ranking interlocutors in Russia.
The contact channel is open, he said, adding that he had spoken to Gen. Gerasimov even after the invasion of Crimea. NATO is going to resume such contacts, Breedlove said.
NATO is no threat to Russia, he stressed.
NATO's goal is to restore the standards of international behavior which have established here in Europe over many years, he said. NATO will work constructively to restore these standards and respects the national borders and sovereignty of nations, the U.S. general said.
