Heletei planning to screen Defense Ministry officials for loyalty

Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletei has said that lustration – the cleansing of the ranks of power – will be conducted at his ministry, but those who are in the area of the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine will not be screened for loyalty.

"Lustration will be conducted, first and foremost, among those who are engaged in supplies," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He said that lustration at the Defense Ministry would be conducted in accordance with the law previously adopted by the Verkhovna Rada.

According to the minister, "the best lustration is the ATO area."

Heletei noted that all commanders and generals who showed their worth in the Donbas combat zone would not be screened.
