Washington developing new sanctions against Russia - State Department
The United States is currently developing a package of new sanctions against Russia if Moscow tries to disrupt the holding of presidential elections in Ukraine on May 25, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland has said.
"What we're doing this week… is trying to develop this strong sectoral package on both sides of the Atlantic so that the Russians can see it, understand it, and understand its impact if they [the Russians] take further action to prevent these elections [in Ukraine] from happening," she said at a hearing at the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Simultaneously, a number of U.S. politicians, according to media reports, expressed support for tougher sanctions against Russia if Moscow recognizes the results of the upcoming referendum in southeastern Ukraine.
