Referendum in Ukraine should be held no later than May 25 – MP Levchenko
An all-Ukrainian referendum should be held no later than May 25, when the first round of early presidential elections is due to take place, Regions Party MP Mykola Levchenko has said.
"The referendum should be held no later than the 25th [of May], during the first round of the presidential elections," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.
When asked what questions could be put to voters at the referendum, Levchenko said that "this also concerns the provisions of the constitution on the Russian language."
"As for the other issues – the delegation of powers [to the regions], regional policy, fiscal policy - these are issues that can be resolved in parliament," he added.
In addition, the MP said that the Regions Party called for the adoption of a law on local referendums.
"We need a law on local referendums in order to reduce the degree of tension in the regions. People want to solve socio-economic and regional issues themselves. We have to give them that right," Levchenko said.
