Storming Euromaidan not in interest of Party of Regions - faction leader

The attempt made early on December 11 to dismantle the main protest camp in Independence Square in the center of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, was not needed by the Party of Regions, Oleksandr Yefremov, leader of the party's parliamentary faction, said.

The Party of Regions absolutely did not need the events of the previous night, Yefremov told the BBC Ukrainian, according to the party's press service.

When the roundtable began, Euromaidan representatives came and expressed their point of view, and we agreed to meet the following day, he said.

The party hoped to be able to launch dialogue but the police attempt to clear the site of protesters hampered this dialogue, he said.

Yefremov said he sometimes has the impression that someone is adding fuel to the flame intentionally and very professionally.

The executive branch of power is allowed to announce court rulings within a certain timeframe permitted by the law, and it had no right to do so between 2200 and 0600, he said.

The officials in charge of this work should be asked why such measures were taken, he added.
