Peaceful and political solution only way for Ukraine out of current situation – Barroso
A peaceful and political solution is the only way for Ukraine out of the current situation, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
The phone conversation was initiated by Yanukovych, the European Commission said on Monday.
Barroso also said that all sides involved in the conflict should show restraint and all civil rights and liberties should be respected in Ukraine.
He also stressed that the use of force by the police should be investigated as soon as possible.
Barroso also said that "it is important that the Ukrainian authorities urgently engage with all relevant political forces."
"President Yanukovych agreed with this approach and explicitly confirmed the intention to investigate into the use of force by the Ukrainian police and to inform the public about the results," reads a European Commission's statement.
