Yanukovych: I will never take a step to the detriment of Ukrainian people

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said in an appeal to the people that he was compelled to make uneasy decisions, risking to be misunderstood. He also said that he will not take steps to the detriment of Ukraine and its people.

"I want peace and tranquility to reign in our large Ukrainian family. As a father cannot leave the family without bread, so have I no right to leave people to the mercy of fate with problems that could arise if production comes to a halt under the pressure we are all feeling, and million of citizens are thrown out to the streets," he said in an appeal posted on the president's Web site.

"Therefore, I am compelled to make uneasy decisions and risk to remain misunderstood. Therefore, I am asking the people to listen to me attentively. I will never take a step to the detriment of Ukraine and its people. The will of the Ukrainian citizens was, is and will remain decisive for each of my decisions. I want the people to know this," the president said.
