Top diplomat: Ukraine should prepare legal basis to get observer status in Customs Union
Ukraine's draft memorandum with the countries of the Customs Union, which was approved by the Ukrainian government, after it is signed, will initiate legal work on the receipt by Ukraine of the status of an observer in the union, Ukrainian First Deputy Foreign Minister Ruslan Demchenko has said.
"It's absolutely a framework document that says that we'll start preparing with the Eurasian Commission the legal principles for our observer status, nothing more," he told Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday.
"There is no question of observer status, now we're only creating the conditions that will form this status from a legal point of view, nothing more," he said, while speaking about Ukraine's prospects to obtain this status after a meeting in Astana on Wednesday.
When asked whether this means that Ukraine will not receive this status after the meeting, Demchenko said: "Let's wait for the end of the meeting."
