Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reports vegetable oil spill in the waters of Pivdenny port after recent massive attacks

As a result of the latest massive enemy attacks, a leak of vegetable oil into the waters of Pivdenny port (Odesa region) was recorded at port infrastructure facilities. Vegetable oil is an organic substance and is subject to natural biological decomposition, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) said in a statement on Wednesday.

"During the first two days after the attack, the port was under continuous shelling. As a result, containment work could only be carried out partially, exclusively during breaks between air raid alerts and in compliance with safety requirements for personnel," the USPA said in a statement on its Telegram channel.

The water area was gradually cordoned off with containment booms, and once the security situation stabilized, they were installed in full.

The ports authority added that specialized vessels for collecting pollutants were involved in the response.

"The USPA, together with all relevant services, is taking all possible measures to localize the spill and prevent further spread of pollution, taking into account the current security and weather conditions," the statement said.

As reported, as a result of enemy strikes on the night of December 21–22, about 30 containers containing flour and vegetable oil caught fire at Pivdenny port, and response and cleanup operations have been ongoing.
