Ukraine negotiating with NATO allies to support protection of Polish sky for possibility of transferring MiG-29 to Ukrainian side - Sybiha
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, during talks with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, raised the issue of transferring Polish MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine.
"The Minister noted that the Ukrainian side understands the importance of Poland's protection of its own airspace. Therefore, Ukraine is negotiating with NATO allies aimed at supporting the protection of the Polish sky and the eastern borders of the Alliance," the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reports.
Sybiha also stressed that Ukraine urgently needs an allied solution to shoot down enemy targets over its own territory.
"Russia brutally attacks our cities, infrastructure, and civilian infrastructure on a daily basis. We need more protection for our people. We need immediate bold decisions," he said.
During the discussion, the ministers agreed that Ukraine's membership in NATO is the only way to ensure the long-term security of Europe. Sybia reiterated that Ukraine needs to be invited to NATO right now.
The Foreign Minister also said that he appreciates Poland's role as the main hub for international assistance to Ukraine and expressed hope for Poland's active participation in the reconstruction of Ukraine. The Minister invited Polish business to participate in restoration projects.
The heads of Ukrainian and Polish diplomacy discussed border issues. Sybiha noted that the development of border infrastructure is important for both sides. He said that Ukraine and Poland are seeking to sign an agreement on joint border control.
"We believe that the transit of agricultural goods from Ukraine should take place unhindered - in accordance with the spirit and letter of the ‘Solidarity Paths’ created by the EU," the minister said.
The Foreign Minister informed his colleague about the situation at the front. The Minister noted that Ukrainian soldiers need more weapons and equipment, and stressed his personal deep gratitude to Poland for its strong defense support.
