Private investors ready to finance building of facilities for 2015 EuroBasket, says Kolomoisky

Private investors willing participate in the building of the facilities for the 2015 European Basketball Championship are ready to start work, businessman Ihor Kolomoisky said during the sitting of a coordinating committee for preparing for and holding the championship.

"The private investors have met many times, distributing functions and duties between them. We're ready to start building," the president's press service quoted the businessman as saying.

According to him, preparations for the EuroBasket 2015 should demonstrate the efficiency of the state-private partnership in Ukraine.

"This must be a demonstration project, which will show that the partnership between the state and private investors is the most efficient. We elaborated a model long ago, more than a year ago, and from the very beginning planned the state-private partnership for building these complexes," he said.

As Ukraine’s Deputy Premier Oleksandr Vilkul earlier reported, Ukraine plans to attract UAH 4.3 billion in private investment for the construction of infrastructure facilities for the finals of the EuroBasket 2015 European Basketball Championship.

He said that the strategy for the development of the national sports infrastructure for this tournament foresees that private investors completely assume responsibility for the construction of six new sports arenas costing UAH 3.75 billion. In addition, private investors are financing the construction of terminals at airports in Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk worth UAH 1.308 billion.

The state, in turn, will allocate UAH 7.057 billion to prepare for the championship. He said that state funds would be used to reconstruct the Sports Palace in Kyiv, create training sites for national teams, compensate for interest rates on bank loans issued to private investors, construct new runways at airports in Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk, as well as develop the existing infrastructure in the cities hosting the tournament.

As reported, on December 18, 2011 Ukraine received the right to host the European Basketball Championship in 2015. Ukraine proposed hosting the championship in its largest cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

On March 29, 2012 the Cabinet of Ministers created an organizing committee to prepare for and host EuroBasket 2015, led by the country's prime minister.
