Treatment facilities at Bortnychi aeration plant not affected by dam breach - TV

Work to tackle the consequences of a dam breach at the Bortnychi aeration plant outside Kyiv have finished, according to a 1+1 television channel report made on Thursday morning.

According to the report, the part of the dam that broke has no sewage filters and the plant's treatment facilities haven't been affected.

As of Thursday morning, some 200 meters of the road leading to the dam were under water.

As reported, a dam broke in silt field No.3 of the Bortnychi aeration plant at around 1900 on Wednesday. Kyiv City State Administration reported that the breach was around a meter in diameter and that some 1.9 hectares of the surrounding area were flooded.

The breach came as a result of melting snow and rise in groundwater, the State Emergency Situations Service reported.

The leak was stopped at around 0245 on Thursday. The emergency works continued until 0500.

Silt field No. 3 at the Bortnychi aeration plant has an area of 106 hectares. A total of 590 people and 36 units of special equipment were involved in the cleanup operation.

The closest village, which is situated three kilometers from the breach, hasn't been affected. No farmland was flooded. The fields that were flooded have not been used for a decade, according to Kyiv City Administration.
