Legal and Financial Support for Veterans and IDPs
War veterans and internally displaced persons (IDPs) remain among the most vulnerable groups in Ukraine. They face significant challenges in navigating complex legal and financial systems. After completing military service or being forcibly displaced from their homes, they still have to address pressing issues such as securing compensation, pensions, housing, employment and social assistance.
IDPs are forced to rebuild their lives in an unfamiliar environment, frequently without the appropriate documentation that hinders their access to financial aid. Many of them encounter integrating into the labor market, and the inability to secure housing or financial support leaves them vulnerable to further instability.
In order to address these pressing concerns, the PanteonX International Charitable Foundation, operating in Spain and Ukraine, is developing a range of initiatives, including:
- Financial literacy programs. Financial education is critical for veterans and internally displaced persons, as it allows them to effectively manage their own finances and plan for the future. The programs will cover topics such as budgeting, debt management, retirement planning, and understanding their entitlements to benefits.
- Housing is fundamental to the successful reintegration of veterans into civilian life. The foundation supports initiatives that ensure assistance to veterans and displaced people to provide housing, reducing the risk of homelessness.
- In collaboration with professional lawyers, the foundation helps to overcome legal barriers and provide access to legal support through free legal consultations for veterans and displaced persons aimed at protecting their rights and interests.
"We aim to provide veterans and those affected by the war with the necessary support so that they can assert their rights and regain their confidence. That is why we are working on implementing systems in Ukraine that will meet their specific needs," Director of the Ukrainian office of the foundation Mykola Hirni states.
In Spain, the foundation's volunteers and lawyers continue to provide consultations and support to Ukrainians in the process of obtaining temporary protection status. This includes assistance with document processing, scheduling appointments for obtaining or renewing a TIE number, preparing documents for social assistance or government subsidies, support during real estate transactions, as well as translation and consultations in accounting centers, insurance companies, and government institutions.
Studying international models and adapting them to local conditions is essential for cutting through bureaucratic obstacles. However, collaboration in developing comprehensive support systems for veterans and displaced individuals is equally crucial.
