Overwhelming support in Ukraine for joining EU, NATO – opinion poll
The overwhelming majority (84%) of Ukrainian citizens support the entry of the Ukrainian state into the European Union, according to the results of a sociological survey conducted by the sociological service of the Razumkov Center from January 19 to January 25 and presented at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine agency on Wednesday.
Support for joining the EU in Ukraine continues to grow: in December 2022 it was 79%.
Only 7% of respondents do not support joining the EU (in December 2022 this was 8%).
Accession to the EU is supported by 91% of residents of the Western macro-region, 86% of the Central, 78% of the Eastern and 74.5% of the Southern.
The younger the respondents, the more often they support joining the EU - the share grows from 80% in the older (60 or more years old) group to 89% among those under 30 years old.
Among those who communicate predominantly in Ukrainian at home, 87% support joining the EU, and among those who predominantly speak Russian – 77%.
Some 23% of respondents believe that Ukraine will be able to join the EU within 1-3 years, 27% within 3-5 years, 15% within 5-10 years, 5% within 10-20 years. Six percent are of the opinion that Ukraine will never be able to join the EU. Among those who do not support joining the EU, 42% believe that Ukraine will never be able to join this union; among those who support accession, only 2% think so.
The majority of respondents express a positive attitude towards the EU (87%), NATO (77%), Council of Europe (67%), International Monetary Fund (62%), UN (57%), International Committee of the Red Cross (54%), the relative majority - to the OSCE (48.5%) and the IAEA (45.5%). A negative attitude towards the CIS prevails (65% have a negative attitude towards it).
The study was conducted as part of the Join in! Community Engagement Program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The survey was conducted face-to-face among 2,000 adult respondents in government-controlled areas where there is no fighting. The structure of the sample population reproduces the demographic structure of the adult population of the territories where the survey was conducted as of the beginning of 2022 (by age, gender, type of settlement). The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%. Additional systematic sampling biases are possible, in particular due to the evacuation of citizens.
