Scheme to change government without holding elections launched in Ukraine, says expert
Kyiv, November 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A scheme to change the government without holding snap parliamentary elections has been launched in Ukraine, Committee of Voters of Ukraine Head Ihor Popov has claimed.
"First of all, there was a scheme for a change in power as a result of elections – to deprive the BYT of control of the Cabinet of Ministers by holding early elections. But this attempt has failed," he said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Friday.
Popov said that such a scheme was drafted long ago in Donetsk, "but very respected Kyiv people came to agree on how to achieve this goal without holding elections."
"It is cheaper and easier," he said.
He said that the first step in the scheme – the dismissal of Speaker Arseniy Yatseniuk, had already been realized. The next step, he said, could be the replacement of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense Bloc's leader and the election of a new chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.
"Further steps could very likely be the formation of a new political structure by the new year, including the reelection of the prime minister and the entire composition of the government," Popov said.
