Justice minister backs initiative to ban civil servants' membership of political parties
Kyiv, April 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A ban on civil servants' membership of political parties, as provided in a bill on civil service, will contribute to the de-politicization of the authorities, however, this provision could be rejected at the request of the opposition, Justice Minister Oleksandr Lavrynovych has said.
"As for the restriction of participation in political parties, this provision will help stop the politicization of the civil service and ensure that civil servants do not suffer from the change of political power," he said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Monday.
He noted that restrictions on the participation of civil servants in political parties were a normal practice in many countries.
However, he said that this provision was not fundamental during consideration of the bill.
The bill was determined by the head of state to be urgent for consideration by parliament.
