Voters Committee fears problems with candidates' nomination and registration in some regions

Kyiv, September 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Committee of Voters of Ukraine (CVU) fears there might be problems with the nomination and registration of candidates for the local elections in the most problematic regions.

"I expect some problems with nominations might appear in problematic regions," CVU Chairman Oleksandr Chernenko said at a press conference on September 27, 2010.

"Some candidates will be registered at once, and others will have to pass through the scrutinizing of their party's electoral rolls, checks of their declarations and searches for inaccuracies in them, and the hindering of their registration," he added.

"We will see problems in Odesa, as long as Eduard Hurvits, Oleksiy Kostusev, Oleksiy Honcharenko and Vasyl Tsushko run there. I mean, there will be too many 'heavyweighters' per square meter in Odesa," the CVU head said.

According to him, "it will be interesting in Ivano-Frankivsk and Uzhhorod, but rather boring in Vinnytsia and Donetsk."

We will have something to look at in Crimea, where the Regions Party will be competing with pro-Russian and left-wing political forces.

Chernenko also noted that the territorial election commissions were weighted towards representatives of the parties forming the coalition.

The CVU also "doubts the professionalism of most commissions, because they were formed in a very short time, and some mistakes might appear" in their work.

"But in general, I think the commissions will cope with the task," Chernenko said.
