Introduction of universal telecoms services fund to increase Ukrtelecom's value, board chairman says

Kyiv, March 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – If the parliament of Ukraine adopts a law on a universal telecom services fund, the value of Ukrtelecom will significantly rise when it is privatized, Ukrtelecom Board Chairman Heorhiy Dzekon has said.

"I've always been for the company's privatization. I believe it's necessary to adopt a law on a universal services fund. The law's adoption will significantly increase the company's value. If we privatize the company without the law, the price would be quite high, but in any case it would be lower [than with the law]," he said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

As reported, a year ago the Verkhovna Rada rejected a draft law that foresaw the creation of the universal services fund. It was planned to use the fund to cover the losses of providing unprofitable telecommunications services in rural areas. The draft law foresaw payments worth 3% of the value of all telecoms services to the fund.
