Four-times rise in Kyiv transport fares unjustified, says leader of BYT faction in Kyiv council

Kyiv, November 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The faction of the bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko in Kyiv city council believes that the four-times rise in municipal transport fares is unjustified.

"I state that [raising the fares from UAH 0.50 to] UAH 2 is an absolutely unjustified surge. A surge made without any social compensations," leader of the BYT faction in Kyiv council Oleksandr Zinchenko said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Monday.

He said that the resolution of Kyiv city state administration baselessly quoted the decision of Kyiv city council dated September 30 while raising the fares in Kyiv public transport to UAH 2 starting from November 4

"This is the gross perversion of the decision of [the Kyiv council's] session," he said.

In its decision, the council stated that the public transport of the capital city is in deep crisis, and passed a comprehensive program for fighting this crisis, Zinchenko said.

"There was not a single word about the need to raise the fares in this decision, as according to the law, Kyiv city state administration has had the exclusive right to raise the fares since 1996," he added.

At the same time, he said that the issue of the prime cost of Kyiv transport enterprises' services hasn't been resolved yet, as there have been no audits at these enterprises.

Besides, transport enterprises do not use to the full extent the possibilities to raise their incomes through advertising and renting their facilities, Zinchenko added.
