Tymoshenko trying to save her leadership in opposition, says political expert

Kyiv, May 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Head of the Penta Center for Applied Political Studies Volodymyr Fesenko does not exclude that Yulia Tymoshenko in future will support a parliamentary or parliamentary-presidential model of governing in Ukraine.

"I don't exclude that within a definite period, Yulia Volodymyrivna [Tymoshenko] will support the idea of transforming the Ukrainian political system into a parliamentary-presidential system," he told at the press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

According to the political scientist, "it will meet her interests, but it won't meet the interests of the other leaders of opposition, who now are the candidates for victory at the president's elections."

Commenting on the latest statement by Tymoshenko, Fesenko said that the main reason it was made is the forthcoming congress of Batkivschyna, where Arseniy Yatseniuk will be elected as the leader of the political force.

"With these letters Yulia Volodymyrivna is reminding people that she remains the leader of Batkivschyna, and the political strategy of Batkivschyna and the united opposition should be agreed with her," he said.

The political scientist noted that Tymoshenko supported holding the "Rise Up, Ukraine!" rally on May 18.

"The later a single candidate for the presidential elections is chosen, the better it will be for Yulia Volodymyrivna," he said.

According to the expert, "if a single candidate from the opposition is nominated in spring 2014, then Tymoshenko as a potential and traditional leader of opposition will pale into insignificance, and the opposition will get a new leader."

According to Fesenko, the main reason for Tymoshenko's statement "is the struggle to save her leadership of the opposition."
