Around 100,000 Kyiv residents want referendum on Kyiv mayor's dismissal

Kyiv, May 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Around 100,000 residents from Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky District have called for the holding in the city of a referendum on passing a vote of no-confidence in Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky.

Shevchenkivska District State Administration Head Viktor Pylypyshyn reported the figure at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Tuesday.

He recalled that a referendum had been held in the district May 7 through May 17. According to the protocol of the Shevchenkivska district territorial election commission, a total of 105,600 people participated in the referendum, or 58.8% of the total number of voters.

Three questions were put at the referendum. A total of 97,100 people (91.93%) voted for the question "Do you support the holding in Kyiv of a city referendum on passing a vote of no-confidence in Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky."

A total of 96,000 people (90.93%) gave a negative answer to the question "Do you support the Kyiv administration's initiatives on the introduction of paid medical services?"

A total of 96,300 people answered negatively to the question "Do you support a rise in municipal tariffs for the public without guarantees of their quality?"

Pylypyshyn said that the results of the referendum would be sent to country's top-ranking officials and the leaders of political forces. In his opinion, the results of this referendum will have, first and foremost, political consequences.

"I think that ahead of the presidential elections, there won't be any politician or political force ignoring the results of our referendum," he said.

Pylypyshyn said that UAH 7,200 had been allocated from the city budget to produce ballots. He also said that non-governmental organizations and political parties had financed the work of the election commission.
