CIS-EMO proposes Ukrainians report violations during parliamentary elections

Kyiv, September 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – During its work at the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2012, the Commonwealth of the Independent States - Elections Monitoring Organization (CIS-EMO) will focus on monitoring violations, CIS-EMO Director Aleksey Kochetkov has said.

"This time we decided not to focus on the mass activities of our observers, but to work with representatives of local public and political organizations for the mutual exchange of information on violations and to try to build a new system of interaction between international observers, national observers, and the civil society of Ukraine," he said at a press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday.

Kochetkov said an information portal would be launched soon, where any citizen, and not only a participant of the election process, will be able to report violations.

"If this information is confirmed and we consider it a violation, we will send a letter to the Central Election Commission with information on the fact with a request that it evaluate the case," he said.

In turn, CIS-EMO expert Oleg Vernik said that the organization would register violations of the elections process, as well as provide legal assistance.

"We will also develop a system of legal support," he said.

The CIS-EMO international election observation organization is an international non-governmental organization whose main task is the preservation and development of the institution of elections and public control over them in all countries with developing democratic systems.

The CIS-EMO was set up and registered in Russia in September 2003. It worked in Ukraine at the presidential election in 2004 and 2010, at the parliamentary elections in 2006, and at the local elections in 2010.
