Symonenko: Communists supporting demands of coalminers

Kyiv, July 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Communist Party of Ukraine will support all of the demands of Ukrainian coalminers aimed at radically changing the situation in the sector, party leader Petro Symonenko has said.

"Coalminers in Brianka are already preparing for a march to Kyiv on the occasion of Coalminer's Day... There will be a tense time due to the fact that in general the situation is worsening. Those statements, very often positive, that are being made by some government representatives, to put it mildly, not only surprise me, they already shock me... The coalminers already have very serious plans. We're supporting them politically, and, of course, we're discussing with them what to do further before they start this march to Kyiv," he said at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine agency on Monday.

Symonenko noted that large-scale unemployment, the closure and conservation of coalmines, the reduction of jobs and the lack of social protection remained major problems in the coal industry.

In addition, he said that the communists were totally against the privatization of enterprises in the coal industry.
