Kyiv to host 64th World Newspaper Congress in early September
Kyiv, June 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The 64th World Newspaper Congress and the 19th World Editors Forum will take place in Kyiv on September 2-5.
"The task of this congress is to tell the Ukrainian government that it's necessary to treat the press in the same way as any other economic branch. I hope that this position will be heard. I hope that it will help the Ukrainian media develop in a different way after the congress is held - develop more consciously and develop economically," President of the United Media Holding Group (UMH Group) Boris Lozhkin said at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine news agency in Kyiv on Thursday.
Lozhkin said that "WAN-IFRA relies on the development of the Ukrainian media market - our market is relatively small, difficult, but very promising."
Director General of the Ukrainian Association of Press Publishers (UAPP) Oleksiy Pohorelov said that the congress and the editors forum would bring together "over a thousand of the most influential people at a high level of management from the media business" from more than a hundred countries.
He also said that the UAPP had provided for Ukrainian publishers a lower price for their participation in the congress.
"It [the price] is twice lower than the price for WAN-IFRA members. Participation in the congress will cost WAN-IFRA members EUR 1,190, and Ukrainian participants EUR 590," he said.
Chairman of the State Committee on Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine Oleksandr Kurdinovych said that the upcoming congress was the second largest event for Ukraine after Euro 2012.
