Ex-director of Defense Ministry’s Dept Liyev taken into custody until April 8

The appeal judges partially satisfied the prosecutor's complaint and applied a preventive measure in the form of detention to former acting director of the Department of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksandr Liyev, the Center for Counteracting Corruption said on Monday.

"Liyev was taken into custody in the courtroom. The period of detention is up to and including April 8. The amount of a bail is UAH 50 million. In case of posting a bail, Liyev will be assigned a number of duties, in particular, wearing an electronic bracelet and handing over passports," the Center said on the Telegram channel.

The decision was reportedly made by judges Danyyila Chornenka, Serhiy Bodnar and Ihor Panaid.

It’s about the cases of concluding a contract between the Ministry of Defense and Lviv Arsenal company for the supply of 100,000 mine rounds. In November 2022, the Ministry of Defense transferred UAH 1.34 billion in advance payments to Lviv Arsenal. Further, Lviv Arsenal transferred part of the funds in the amount of $3.6 million and EUR 9.1 million to the Slovak intermediary Sevotech.

"Most of them then went to the accounts of another intermediary, the Croatian company WDG promet. Now this money has disappeared, and not a single mine has been delivered," the the Center for Counteracting Corruption said.

The prosecutor of the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) asked for a bail of more than UAH 268 million.
