Ukraine to develop necessary system to combat corruption – EU Commission Vice-President

Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová expressed confidence that a decent anti-corruption system will be developed in Ukraine.

"We have incredible admiration for you and the progress that you are demonstrating, implementing very complex reforms... I want to be an authentic witness of the work that you will have done. I am sure that I will return with the message that Ukraine is doing everything possible to ensure creating an appropriate system for combating corruption," the press service of the Verkhovna Rada quoted Jourová as saying at a meeting with the leadership of parliament and representatives of factions and groups on Monday.

In turn, First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Korniyenko noted the parliament's determination to complete work on bills, the adoption of which is necessary for the start of Ukraine's negotiations on joining the European Union.

"We have positive results of the implementation of two steps outlined in the European Commission's Anti-Corruption Policy Report," he said, adding that work is already underway on bills on the rights of national minorities and on lobbying.

Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Olena Kondratiuk also said all factions and groups understand the responsibility and historical mission of this convocation of parliament – to bring Ukraine's opportunities closer to joining the European Union.

According to her, Ukrainian society associates joining the European Union with security.

"More than 60% of our people say and believe that if they join the EU, they will ensure their right to security," Kondratiuk said.
