Ukrainians stuck in Istanbul due to bad weather accommodated in hotels, provided with food
Citizens of Ukraine who were stuck in Istanbul due to weather conditions have been accommodated in hotels and provided with food, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleh Nikolenko has said.
"Thanks to the work of the consuls, Ukrainians who were stuck in Istanbul due to bad weather have been accommodated in hotels and provided with food. We are cooperating with the Turkish side to launch canceled flights as soon as possible and return our citizens home," Nikolenko wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
The heavy snowfall that has been falling for the past few days has paralyzed the operation of Istanbul airport. Thousands of passengers are blocked in the air harbor due to a snowstorm: all flights were canceled, as well as roads leading to the airport were closed.
In addition, earlier on Monday, due to strong gusts of wind, the roof of the construction of the cargo terminal of Istanbul airport collapsed. As a result of the collapse, no one was injured.
More than 50 cm of snow fell in Istanbul. According to the latest forecasts, the snowfall may continue until Friday.
