National Broadcasting Council to check Viasat on broadcast of Russian TV channels

The National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting will conduct an inspection of Ukrainian satellite and Internet TV provider Viasat (Vision TV LLC, Kyiv) due to information on the broadcast of Russian TV channels by Viasat published on Facebook.

"Now there is information that the program service provider belonging to the 1+1 group has returned to retransmitting Russian TV channels, such as Russia 24, NTV Mir, Channel One, etc.," member of the National Council Serhiy Kostynsky said at a meeting of the Council on March 28.

He stressed that the National Council was obliged to check this information and asked the monitoring and analytical department to monitor the program service provider for the presence of prohibited channels on the air.

In turn, the company Viasat said it was concerned about the untruthful information that users spread in social networks about the allegedly present number of TV channels of the aggressor country in its package offers.

"The information that Hryhoriy Tykhyi [Ukrinform agency's journalist] published in his Facebook post is untrue and is an outright slander. We can regard such actions as intentionally undermining Viasat's reputation and misleading readers by spreading treason in social media without understanding the technical side of the issue," the company's official appeal to the media says.

The company said that there are Ukrainian and international TV channels in the tariff packages offered by the platform Viasat, but there are no Russian TV channels.

"Viasat supports and executes the resolution of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting banning Russian television channels from broadcasting in Ukraine, realizing that this step is necessary for the information protection of citizens of the country. However, unfortunately, today there are still ways to circumvent legislation and illegal connecting banned Russian TV channels, regardless of the providers' tariff offers," the operator stressed.
