Kim Jong Yang of South Korea elected INTERPOL president
Kim Jong Yang has been elected Interpol president, according to an INTERPOL statement posted on Twitter.
"Delegates attending INTERPOL's General Assembly have elected Kim Jong Yang of the Republic of Korea as the Organization's new President," the statement said.
His tenure will last for two years.
Kim formerly served as the acting INTERPOL President.
Kim was appointed acting INTERPOL President on October 7, 2018.
Russia's Alexander Prokopchuk, who became the INTERPOL Vice-President in 2016, was another candidate for the position.
The INTERPOL's supreme ruling body, the General Assembly, elects the INTERPOL president once in every four years. The General Assembly holds annual meetings under the chairmanship of the INTERPOL president.
Ukraine objected to Prokopchuk's candidacy. The Ukrainian Interior Ministry said before the ballot held at the INTERPOL General Assembly that a representative of Russia must not lead the INTERPOL given Russia's involvement "in a series of crime scandals all over the globe and abuse" of the INTERPOL system.
