The Council of Paris has unanimously supported the granting of the title of honorary citizen of the French capital to Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov, who is illegally held in Russia, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has said.
"I thank the Council of Paris, which unanimously voted for the awarding of the honorary citizenship of Paris to Oleh Sentsov. Paris will always be on the side of defenders of individual liberty, freedom of expression and democracy. #FreeSentsov," Hidalgo wrote on her Twitter account on Monday evening.
In August 2015, the North Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Sentsov, who was detained in Crimea in 2014, to 20 years in a high-security penitentiary for plotting a terrorist attack there. Sentsov went on hunger strike on May 14, 2018 and demanded that all Ukrainians held in Russia for political reasons be freed.
