Situation in Ukraine's temporarily occupied territories to be discussed at 73rd UNGA session

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has announced the inclusion of an item on the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine on the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly, the Ukrainian president has said.

"In pursuance of my instruction, work on inclusion a new item "Situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine" in the agenda of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly has been successfully carried out," Poroshenko said on Facebook on Friday evening.

"This will allow, through a barrage of misinformation, to reveal the truth to the world community about the tragic consequences of the occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation and the ongoing aggression in Donbas," the president said.

This decision was adopted by the majority: 68 affirmative votes and 13 dissenting votes. At the same time, Armenia, Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, Iran, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Philippines, Russia, Sudan, Syria and Venezuela opposed the inclusion of the item "Situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine" in the agenda," the Permanent Ukrainian Mission to the United Nations said on Facebook.

Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN, Volodymyr Yelchenko, noted that there is "a clear signal from the UN member states to support Ukraine's position on the peaceful settlement of the conflict with Russia." "Continuation of Russia's disregard for the UN Charter will inevitably lead to complete isolation," he said.

According to Yelchenko, the inclusion of this item will make it possible to use more effectively the UN instruments in the context of efforts to counter the Russian armed aggression and accelerate the de-occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

"We plan to initiate consideration of the situation in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories in all its dimensions, in particular in the political, security, humanitarian, economic, social, human rights, gender, etc. The decision of the General Assembly lays the foundation for an effective visit of the delegation headed by the president of Ukraine to the UN headquarters next week," Ukraine's permanent representative to the United Nations said.
