Poroshenko says he plans to secure in Constitution Ukraine's desire to join NATO
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has reiterated his intention to secure in the Constitution of Ukraine the country's aspiration to join NATO.
"This is why I have the intention to fix a strategic course of transatlantic integration in the Constitution of Ukraine, just not to allow anybody to backslide," he said in a joint statement with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels on Thursday.
He expressed hope that the alliance's doors are open to Ukraine and Georgia and stressed that the Ukrainian state will prepare for joining NATO.
"We will not ask permission from anyone, whether we have the right to become a NATO member state or not," Poroshenko said.
He also expressed hope that the alliance would support the Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine.
