Rada adopts law on Ukraine's accession to Metre Convention

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted the law on Ukraine's accession to the Metre Convention.

A total of 232 MPs voted for the document at second reading at a plenary meeting on Wednesday, May 23.

According to the explanatory note, the bill was drafted in compliance with the provisions of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, according to which Ukraine should fully ensure the participation of relevant national authorities in European and international organizations on legislative and fundamental metrology in accordance with its sphere of activity and status of membership in these organizations.

The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) was established by the Metre Convention. Its main tasks are the development and support of international standards for measurement units of the International System of Units (SI).

Fifty-eight countries are currently parties to the Metre Convention. Forty-three states, including Ukraine, have participated in the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) in the status of associate participants since 2002.

This law will help Ukraine become a member of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and use the rights of a full BIPM member, in particular to vote at CGPM meetings. This will help assess the degree of equivalence of national standards in the shortest possible time and with the highest accuracy.
