Slight decrease in harvest possible in southern regions of Ukraine due to drought

A slight decrease in harvest winter crops is possible due to a lack of moisture in soil in southern regions of Ukraine, Head of the agrometeorological department of the Ukrainian weather center Tetiana Adamenko has told Interfax-Ukraine.

"Today droughts are seen on the territory of Ukraine, particularly in the south, which primarily refers to winter crops, in the southern districts of Kherson, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhia regions, where there was no rain for 25-30 days. This is local. Harvest could be smaller in these regions due to a drought," she said.

According to Adamenko, in the rest of the territory, due to the large amount of precipitation during the cold period, moisture is sufficient to form a normal harvest of winter crops.

"The situation with spring crop is not so good due to sowing in April and a short time for it. There are still no sprouts in many areas because they were sowed in dry soil, but the situation should change with the arrival of the cyclone. We expect after May 15-16 the temperature drop and it will be raining," she said.

As of the moment, fruit crops are not in danger, they are in the active flowering phase.

"A somewhat unfavorable factor was the high air temperatures in April, which contributed to rapid flowering, which may affect the number of fruit, but this will not drastically affect the volume of the harvest," Adamenko said.
