Manafort had influence over Ukrainian govt under Yanukovych
Former political consultant and advisor to disgraced ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych had his own 'shadow government' in Ukraine with representatives in each government ministry.
"Paul has a whole separate shadow government structure … In every ministry, he has a guy," said Franklin Foer, citing Manafort's assistant Ricky Gates. Foer is author of an article, titled "The Plot against America," to appear as the cover story in The Atlantic Magazine's March issue.
Foer in the article says Manafort received huge amounts of money from Yanukovych, the most he had ever earned as a political consultant. The money was collected from Yanukovych's cronies. The article says Manafort returned to the United States after the Revolution of Dignity in 2014 and received psychological treatment to address his suicidal urges.
