Rada sends bill on Constitutional Court of Ukraine back for revision
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has sent a bill on the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (6427-d) back for revision to the parliamentary committee on legal policy and justice.
The corresponding decision was supported by 267 lawmakers at a plenary session on Thursday evening after MPs did not have enough votes to pass it, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.
The adoption of this bill is required for enacting the constitutional changes dealing with the justice system that the Verkhovna Rada had passed, head of the relevant committee, one of the authors of the legislative initiative, Ruslan Kniazevych of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction said before the vote.
According to the bill, the Constitutional Court is composed of 18 judges: the president of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada and the Congress of Judges of Ukraine appoint six judges each. At the same time, the Constitutional Court will receive the authority to carry out constitutional proceedings provided that at least two-thirds of the judges take their offices.
The bill states that the Constitutional Court of Ukraine includes the Grand Chamber, two senates and six collegiums.
