The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has not passed in first reading the bill on amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine, which allows the seizure by the state of money and other assets earned illegally (No. 5142).
Only 176 lawmakers supported the document at the plenary session on Thursday, with the required minimum being 226 votes, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.
Also, MPs three times voted for sending the bill to the relevant committee for revision. However this proposal by the speaker did not gain more than 212 votes.
"The bill has been rejected," Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy has said.
Deputy Justice Minister Anton Yanchuk when introducing the bill in parliament explained that it lays down a procedure according to which the state can claim the assets owned by a person who is suspected or charged with committing corruption crimes and is evading investigation and trial.
