Poroshenko signs law allowing National Broadcasting Council to fine TV and radio channels
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed the law authorizing the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting to impose fines on television and radio broadcasters for violating the law.
According to the official website of the Verkhovna Rada, relevant law No. 4815 on amendments to the law on television and radio on improving the procedure of applying sanctions by the National Council, adopted by the parliament on November 1 ,was returned with the president's signature.
As reported, the law was passed at first reading on September 8, and as a whole with 236 votes on November 1, while on November 10 it was signed by the parliament speaker and sent to the president for signature.
According to head of the parliamentary committee on information policy and freedom of speech Viktoria Siumar, the law concerns the possibility of imposing sanctions in the form of fines on broadcasters, whereas at present the National Council has the right to issue a warning, and "two warnings mean the actual deprivation of the license."
